Swarojgar Silai Centre
The Swarojgar Silai Centre is an initiative of the Adgulsa Welfare Foundation dedicated to empowering underprivileged women in Jharkhand by equipping them with tailoring and sewing skills. In the rural and tribal areas of Jharkhand, many women face significant challenges such as low literacy, economic dependency, and a lack of opportunities. This initiative aims to break that cycle by enabling them to learn a culturally relevant and home-based livelihood skill. Through this, we seek to enhance their financial condition and restore their self-worth and confidence.
In Jharkhand, only 24 percent of women are part of the workforce. Many remain economically dependent on male family members, which often leads to limited freedom, a lack of decision-making power, and vulnerability. National data shows that India’s female unemployment rate is 9.2%, significantly higher than that of men (CMIE, 2024). For women in tribal and rural regions, access to jobs is further restricted due to a lack of skills and social norms. Tailoring is a skill that is both culturally accepted and practical, making it an ideal income-generating option for women, especially those who cannot leave their homes for work.
The Swarojgar Silai Centre offers certified training programs in tailoring and sewing that last between 3 to 6 months. Local instructors, who understand the language, traditions, and social dynamics of the learners, conduct the training. The sessions are designed to be practical, flexible, and encouraging. Although the foundation is still in its early phase and does not currently provide entrepreneurial support, sewing machines, or direct market linkages, the training concentrates on skill-building, confidence, and basic financial awareness. Women learn in a supportive environment and gradually gain the courage to begin taking tailoring orders within their community or seek small employment in local tailoring units.
The program aims to help women earn a modest income of ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 per month after training. This additional income can lead to significant improvements in household finances, children’s education, and health-related needs. Beyond financial support, the program promotes self-reliance and decreases dependency on male family members. Women who complete the course also become role models for other girls and women in their community. As their confidence grows, so does their ability to uplift those around them. By focusing particularly on widows, tribal women, and those from extremely poor backgrounds, the Swarojgar Silai Centre ensures that support reaches those who need it most.
Jharkhand has a rich tradition of hand-based crafts and sewing, which makes tailoring a culturally accepted profession for women. Due to household responsibilities, many women prefer home-based work, and tailoring fits this need perfectly. With low female literacy and workforce participation in the state, practical skill development programs like this are essential. This model respects social norms while gently pushing the boundaries toward empowerment and independence.
However, the Swarojgar Silai Centre is still developing its capacity; each batch of trained women takes a step toward dignity, respect, and economic freedom. Through this initiative, Adgulsa Welfare Foundation is nurturing a generation of women who can contribute meaningfully to their families and communities – one stitch at a time.
